Neil Howard with children from the ESAM project

“My time with ESAM was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I would recommend an internship here to anyone. Just make sure you come with an open mind and a lot of commitment.”
Neil Howard, ESAM Intern, Summer 2005

Volunteering

ESAM has a proud tradition of welcoming volunteers and interns from all over the world. All our volunteers are unpaid. Successful applicants are expected to fund their own travel food and accommodation (this can be arranged with a host family for a small fee). A sound knowledge of French is essential.

If you are interested in applying to volunteer with ESAM, please write to us in French, providing your CV and a covering letter stating your areas of interest.

Volunteering and internship opportunities

Maison de l'Enfance

Volunteers play a vital role in our Maison de l'Enfance. Successful candidates work as teaching assistants. Expertise in any subject is welcome but we particularly encourage applications from students capable of teaching English and Information Technology. Volunteers are expected to stay for a minimum of two months.

Mini Maison de l'Enfance

In partnership with British-based charity Stand Up For Africa, ESAM runs a mini Maison de l'Enfance in Bohicon, where 15 sponsored children live and study. You are welcome to apply to volunteer in the mini Maison for a minimum period of two months. Volunteers' responsibilities include looking after the children and helping them with their schoolwork, household chores, and liaising with local communities in partnership with the Director.

Internships

ESAM runs an Internship Scheme at our Head Office in Cotonou. Interns are expected to perform a range of tasks and helping with the general running of the organisation. Duties range from simple administration to working alongside the Program Director on drafting project proposals. A desire to learn, a willingness to work hard, and strong powers of analysis and conceptual thinking are essential.
